TruLondon – Career Websites Lab – Applying science to define the ideal career website

#truLondon is next week, and by the looks of it – this is going to be the biggest one ever. 48 speakers or ‘Track Leaders’ in two days? With the tweetup and RIDE events added to the #tru event as well?

On top of the most interesting,… well to be honest impressive is the better word list of participants to any #tru event ever, there are some new things happening this time. Live streaming will surely be watched globally. One other thing that caught my eye is the detailed plan and schedule to build a recruitment web site – during the two days of the show. I have spent the best part of the last 10 years of my life defining what the recruitment web site should be, and hiring and managing teams who would work on the same. In fact today, I actually do very little outside of that main task – designing and building the future recruitment sites. Obviously when I saw the detailed plan to build a recruitment web site with the collective thinking of long list of people I have learned a lot already, I got excited! This is what Bill has planned for us next week:

TruLondon – Career Websites Lab -Applying science to define the ideal career website

The Brief – Day 1

  1. Defining a career website
    1. TruCareers – The Tru career website
    2. Who is it for employer or candidate
    3. What is it – a job board, an information platform, a community platform, gateway to the ATS
    4. Defining the audience
      1. Active job seekers, semi active, inactive
      2. The visitor personas
      3. Where do they hang out, what do they use: Search engines, social, job boards, offline, mobile
      4. What should a career website contain
        1. Brainstorming functionality and content
        2. What is most important
          1. Defining what is important for the individual personas
          2. Scoring functionality and content
          3. Defining the wireframe structure
            1. Defining the user journey and what they need to see/access
            2. Defining the Home Page
            3. Defining a Job Family Page
            4. Defining the wireframe structure
              1. Defining a Page focussed at an active jobseeker
              2. Defining a Page focussed on a less active job seeker

Build the wireframe before day 2

  1. Presenting the prototype
    1. Feedback
    2. What would you change – why
    3. The candidate experience
      1. Expectations low or high
      2. Employer requirements, volume, filtering, prescreening
      3. Using channels
        1. Content via Facebook, LinkedIn, blogs etc
        2. Do you stay in channel or direct to career platform
        3. Capturing information, how do we…
          1. Register (LinkedIn, Quick Apply, CV Parsing, iProfile)
          2. Follow
          3. Express interest
          4. Apply
          5. Mobile
          6. Continuing the engagement, linking with other platforms
            1. ATS
            2. Talent Community
            3. CRM

This #truLondon, is going to be something else!

CareerZoo Careers and jobs fair

During the Celtic Tiger years and later in the recession the careers and jobs fairs do not seem to be going away. People talk about job boards (going away) and social networks, but there was a tremendous buzz yesterday over the weekend in The Mansion House. In fact so much so that the cue to enter was at some stages all the way to the St. Stephens Green. And rightly so!

The exhibitors list was great. There have been jobs in plenty of sectors. From the general feeling browsing around, I couldn’t help the feeling that the IT sector, in particular, is buzzing like crazy. Plenty of companies to choose from, and not all of them in Dublin’s Silicon Docklands. Plenty of new ‘faces’ as well this year. Gamin sector with their nice stands and of course Twitter. Twitter in fact deserves a special mention since they are the first company that brought T-shirts back into the goodies and did not even bother with the usual pens, etc.

Besides plenty of employers, there was a long list of universities as well as showcasing their educational programmes. It made me think that it would have been a perfect opportunity to lock all the exhibitors in the room, without any visitors, and let them make sure that the training courses and programmes on offer actually do produce the skillset the other side – the employers currently have, and will have in the future. It could be organised as the half day conference with the roundtable at the end. It would benefit both sides, the education sector and the employers, and most of all the job seekers. Note that in the recent pols 70% employers in the IT sector stated that they are aware they will have to look outside of Ireland for their staff needs in 2012.

CareerZoo was a truly great event that will definitely help match a lot of employers and job seekers. Talking to the company representatives and HR managers, every single one of them I spoke to have been happy with the response. The quantity was there definitely. Judging by the excitement of the recruiters – the quality was there as well!

The directors of CareerZoo Brian Ó hOisín and Jackie Slattery have done an excellent job once again!

Brightwater Salary Survey 2012

There is no doubt that the market has improved on the jobs front. Of course, we are talking an improvement from the drastic situation of 2009, to an improvement in 2010 and on into 2011. The best thing to improve the jobs market is confidence. Confidence means that people are optimistically looking to the future of their businesses and planning for growth. Of course, there isn’t universal optimism at the moment, and how can there be?
However, what we have is the next best thing and that is stability. Management can plan again with some surety and this confidence was reflected in quarterly figures where from April – June 2011 the numbers working in Ireland increased on January – March (1,804,200 to 1,821,300). This was the first growth in employment since quarter one 2008, with particularly strong growth in Dublin.
As you will see from the salary survey, salaries are beginning to rise again, but with some sectors performing better than others. Surprising areas of growth have been in things like Financial Services and Pharmaceuticals, with Information Technology continuing its long boom. Construction and related industries continue to suffer, but even these appear to be bottoming out.
I believe we will continue to see slow but steady growth for the next while, before the austerity measures run their course and the tiger roars again! –
David Bloch – Managing Director at Brightwater Recruitment

This is our 13th annual salary survey and one of the most interesting to compile so far. Whilst conducting the survey we have found that companies are diligently watching what’s going on within their sector and are keen to hear what their competitors are doing in relation to pay reviews and salaries in general. The overall sense we are getting is one of cautious optimism. Companies are being sensible and in general are looking at slight increases for key personnel.
Some companies still have a number of staff members that they feel are ‘overpaid’ in the current market and where this applies they are freezing their salaries to try and bring them in line with the market rate.
We are seeing a return of bonuses this year but nothing like those that were paid out during the boom. Sales staff are being rewarded on their sales growth and not necessarily seeing it in their basic salary. Not surprisingly, contract roles are on the increase and these salaries are on par with permanent salaries, however, completion bonuses have made a return.
Finance roles in general are increasing and modest increments are being offered at review time. As the IT market is still candidate led, salaries are increasing in this space at a slightly higher rate than in other areas.
Overall, things are moving again, albeit at a modest pace. It has been encouraging to hear our clients projecting growth again in 2012 and budgeting for new hires. – Mairead Fleming – Deputy Managing Director at Brightwater

The Office Support permanent recruitment market has remained fairly static for 2011 – we expect this trend to continue for the foreseeable future with little uplift. For those employers that are hiring across permanent office support roles, multitasking is the order of the day. Employers expect more “bang for their buck” and expect employees to take on more responsibilities – so flexibility and upskilling from an employee is what is required to ensure that they are keeping ahead of their competition.
However, the trend to hire temporary office support staff as a stop-gap has been pretty vibrant for the majority of 2011 and we absolutely see this trend continuing for 2012. Temporary staff to cover holidays and maternity leave offer the perfect solution to employers to test an employee’s all round skills and willingness to take on additional duties without the employer feeling the need to add to their head count until their overall business improves.
Notwithstanding this, there is a feeling of a little improvement across most sectors currently and should this optimism continue, we expect employment in the office support area to increase albeit slowly for the duration of 2012. – Barbara McGrath – Director at Brightwater

Morgan McKinley Ireland Salary Survey 2012

Morgan McKinley Ireland Salary Survey 2012

Survey finds more than half of Irish professionals have a more positive business outlook for 2012 compared to 2011

Thursday, 5th January 2011 – Morgan McKinley has today released its latest Ireland Salary Survey which offers insights into business confidence, remuneration and human resources trends for professionals working in financial services, professional services, manufacturing and IT in 2012.

Salary Survey Highlights:

o Almost half of respondents (47%) working in financial services, professional services, manufacturing and IT have a more positive business outlook for 2012 compared to 2011. A further 11% feel significantly more positive about the business climate in 2012.

o The majority (58%) expect salaries to remain the same within their businesses over the next 12 months

o Talent attraction is perceived to be the biggest human resources challenge (chosen by 23% of respondents), followed by talent retention (19%) and skills shortages (16%)

o Positively, a low percentage (4%) of HR managers and business leaders are concerned about handling redundancies this year.

The Morgan McKinley Ireland Salary Survey 2012 found that almost half (47%) of HR managers and business leaders surveyed have a more positive business outlook for 2012 compared to 2011. A further 11% feel significantly more positive about the business climate in 2012, whilst 32% say their outlook has not changed from last year.

When asked about compensation trends, the majority (58%) said that they expect salaries to remain the same within their businesses over the next 12 months. However, 21% predict that salaries will increase, albeit modestly, by approximately 1-5%. Conversely, 13% feel that salaries within their businesses will decrease by 1-5% in 2012. These findings are similar to last year’s survey results, in which 64% of managers thought salaries would remain stable in 2011.

Survey participants were also asked what they thought would be the biggest human resources challenge they would have to face in 2012. The highest response was for attracting professionals (23%), followed by talent retention (19%) and skills shortages (16%). Positively, the percentage of managers concerned about handling redundancies in the coming 12 months is quite low at 4%.

Please note: a breakdown of results by sector (financial services, professional services, manufacturing and IT) is available upon request.

Karen O’Flaherty, Chief Operations Officer, Morgan McKinley Ireland commented:
“The findings of our latest Salary Survey point towards a slight lift in business confidence in Ireland, with almost half of managers claiming to have a more positive outlook for 2012 compared to 2011. Although there is still considerable uncertainty in the market and growth predictions are sombre, the major steps taken last year towards Ireland’s economic recovery have made many professionals feel that it is time to ‘move on’ and work towards a stronger and more stable 2012.

“This increased optimism does not necessarily equate to increased salaries however, with the majority of respondents expecting salaries within their businesses to remain unchanged over the next 12 months. A negligible number of managers surveyed (0.2%) expect to see salary increases of more than 10%; it is likely that any significant rises will be within fields where demand for professionals far outstrips supply, for example, IT software developers, multilingual specialists or senior finance professionals.”

“Taking into account the current mood of austerity and ongoing uncertainty over the Euro currency, it may seem strange that talent attraction, talent retention and skills shortages are seen as predominant issues facing human resources managers in 2012. Employers recognise there are still shortages of skilled professionals in certain sectors, so sourcing and retaining top talent within allocated recruitment budgets is a priority, even in this challenging economic climate.”

To compile the Morgan McKinley Ireland Salary Survey 2012, Morgan McKinley conducted telephone and email surveys with 584 HR managers and business leaders working for financial services, professional services, manufacturing and IT companies across the Republic of Ireland.

Morgan McKinley Enables Job Seekers To Apply With LinkedIn

Morgan McKinley is the first Irish recruitment company that have enabled job seekers to apply to their jobs via the Apply with LinkedIn plugin from LinkedIn. After talking to recruiters in Morgan McKinley they say that it does have a drawback because they do not get the applicant’s CV but just a link to the LinkedIn profile.

But Morgan McKinley might me one something much larger here actually. The Apply with LinkedIn button solves one problem that always puzzled me. And that was the applications from the mobile devices? Ireland mobile users are predominantly iPhone 4 users. And guess what – in the iPhone you cannot apply to a job on a web site. Uploading of a CV is not supported. So with all this tremendous growth of the mobile smartphone (or not so smart!?) web traffic the only conversion one could achieve is to make job seekers email themselves with a link to the job advertised, and deal with it later on, on the PC. And that we know is pure rubbish of a process. Having a button that sends a recruiter your LinkedIn profile instantly – and all that with a single click (well two actually) sounds much better to me.

Morgan McKinley being ranked as a second highest ranking recruitment agency in Ireland by Alexa has a significant traffic on their site. We are not talking hundreds a day any more for a long time now. There is most likely still a single digit percentage of the mobile visitors, but that will grow to double digit figure in the next year as well. Without the Apply with LinkedIn button – they would not get a single interaction from all those mobile users.

Well done Morgan McKinley!

CPL.ie: Top Recruitment Agency Web Site in Ireland

When your competition and independent industry experts point to your web site as the best there is very little more, that is more satisfying. Yes I know you are going to say what about the revenue and profits? OK, yes that too, but the first next best thing then is a clear industry recognition of a true winner. A real market leader, the one all the competition aspire to be. Here is Jonathan Campbell the most known recruitment trainer in Ireland today showcasing the elements of the CPL.ie web site in his training session, and also publishing statistics showing CPL.ie on top of the list of Irish recruitment agency web sites.

For two years I have worked on the CPL.ie web site. It was far from a leading spot when I took over the ownership of it. The worst thing was Google didn’t really ‘like’ it very much. As time went by, optimizing the site little by little, I watched Google Analytics every morning, and witnessed the traffic growing. In the first 12 months we got it 4 times higher. Yes, 400% traffic increase in a year on CPL.ie.

Funny enough we still couldn’t say – we (CPL.ie) are number one web recruitment agency site in Ireland. You simply do not know what traffic others are achieving. Every now and then I would get a recruitment manager of a certain industry saying –this and that agency are always above us in the searches! What do we do about it?! I could do nothing to prove them wrong. I only had our visitors data, and could show it growing, and growing quick.

In the second year of working on CPL.ie web site, and staring in the traffic figures every day, I realised we have actually done something. We have done something BIG. I simply couldn’t believe ANY recruitment agency could be having such traffic and especially number of applications made on the web site. We go to the stage where the CPL.ie would deliver more CV’s than paid jobs sites. Even within CPL there have still been those that believed that we are still below some other agencies. Some also believed we are just scratching the surface, and our traffic could be 100 times more based on ‘their estimates’. I love democracy and the freedom of speech but,…

Most importantly, the same growth we have achieved with the CPL.ie web site was exactly in the years that job seekers drastically changed their online behaviours, and simply stopped looking for jobs online as they have been before. All job sites have shown a decrease in web site traffic number in that same period when CPL.ie grown so much.

Last month I looked at requests for proposal from different recruitment agencies to develop their web sites. What was remarkable was the number of times CPL.ie was referenced in those documents. Yes, it made me feel proud about what we did with CPL.ie web site. Especially since now I can proudly say aloud: CPL.ie is the top recruitment agency web site in Ireland!

Rock bottom quality journalism from Silicon Republic

In the lovely article titled ‘UK tech companies fall behind US in social recruiting – survey

Silicon Republic states:

US companies are ahead of their UK counterparts when it comes to using the web and social media to recruit new employees, new research from recruitment software provider Zartis suggests.
LinkedIn is the most popular social media network for recruitment, with one-quarter of US companies directly advertising job vacancies on the site, compared to 14pc of UK companies doing the same.

So what a Silicon Republic reader is let to believe is? Yes, you have guessed it right, and the title of the article have helped you: UK tech companies fall behind US in social recruiting.

The only fact in the whole article to back it up is that there is more top US companies advertising jobs on LinkedIn than in UK. So the conclusion that the UK companies fall behind US ones is based on the number of jobs advertised on LinkedIn.

The reason this is so sad is that it shows absolute lack of understanding what online recruitment on the social networks actually is from the author of the article from SiliconRepublic. Any recruiter that uses LinkedIn knows well that even the city with the largest number of recruiters in the World on LinkedIn is – guess what? London! The number of social recruitment conferences in London is as well greater (per capita) than in any other city in the world!

The truth is that the UK, as well as majority of the European recruiters know well that advertising jobs is the last thing to do on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a ‘Social Network’ not a ‘Jobs Board’. Making a statement that the UK recruiters are ‘falling behind’ based on the number of jobs posted is just very, very wrong.

The best will be in about a year’s time when the ‘Update’ to this statistics gets published with the update: ‘UK recruiters are catching up with the US’. That will be based on the increase of the number of jobs published on LinkedIn in UK next year. I am guessing SiliconRepublic will not see any connection on the LinkedIn sales staff numbers in UK in the increase of the number of jobs posted next year.

National Online Recruitment Awards, NORA – how does it look like in UK?

In Ireland we have our NRF that gives awards to the recruitment agencies (NRF members only) and within those there is an Award for the Best Recruitment Web Site.

Then we have the Golden Spiders awards that again one has to pay €150 per site to get ‘Nominated’, so the real good work of start-ups is never seen there. Recruiters actually rarely feature there at all with the exception of national job boards that use it for branding.

UK has National Online Recruitment Awards – NORA. In 5 days NORA will be announcing the winner in the long list of categories. Here is a full list of categories and 5 shortlisted candidates for the awards in 2011.

Dropped.ie – Get your ‘jobs’ domain name

Starting a job board on any other recruitment online business???

The first step is to choose a name. A name that is available online. I for example dream avout starting a job site in Ireland. After a long search for the available domain in the I found JobsBoard.ie and registered it for the new site: www.JobsBoard.ie

How to find a good (used but in good condition) domain name in Ireland?

Dropped.ie is your best friend!

For those of you less familiar with it, Dropped.ie brings you lists of deleted (previously registered) IE domain names.

Career Internet Job Site Jobs Recruitment Recruitment Agency

SOLAS

SOLAS is the new name of FAS. Regardless of the way the government is trying to paint the picture, FAS is still alive and well. All the staff are safe, all the decision makers and all the way to the Board of Directors in FAS. The internal organisation is to change a bit, but in essence same people that made FAS what it is, and you have probably made your mind up about that, these same people are automatically now all safe in their jobs in SOLAS. Same desks, same offices, same jobs, just a change of the logo and the name. Probably a nice gig for some marketing and rebranding agency.

From the recruitment perspective FAS was a failure. Statistics are showing that job seekers that got the FAS training were less likely to get a job than those that didn’t. When I first saw it, it seemed unbelievable. A Government agency managing to achieve the opposite from what is its main goal. Like a Department of Finance that works successfully on bringing the country to the bankruptcy. Not a good example?

FAS staff cannot be fired basically. Regardless of the company performance. Now how cool is that? Imagine working in an average Irish SME that does not make any revenue, any service, any product, and profit. And all your co-workers have a safe job in the company. You go bankrupt, they just change the name on the front door. And keep on doing (or not) what you always was. Wonderland? Communism?

FAS.ie was set up as a web site where every Irish company could advertise their jobs, and job seekers could find them. In the time that FAS.ie was ‘operating’, there was a long list of private companies that realised how well FAS operates. They took that role and delivered a great service to Irish Employers and job seekers for many years. From Irish Times on Friday, to IrishJobs.ie, Jobs.ie and of course not to forget EmployIreland.ie! 

With FAS being repainted with SOLAS colours, should we expect that their new web site will actually provide a service FAS.ie was built for? Same people, same (no) agenda and a new colours, is there a reason to expect a different results? Well know. And this is what hurts me. FAS (oops, SOLAS since yesterday sorry) was built with a really great idea. A free service (eh,… OK there is an army of people on its payroll paid by taxpayer) that facilitates getting the best available candidates to fill the vacancies in Irish companies. If this task is done right, if he best people available in Ireland is hired for each vacancy that appears, and that done fast, this reduces the recruitment cost and increases the speed. Less overheads for Irish companies, makes them more profitable and hence more competitive internationally. So poor FAS.ie contributed to development of a number of Irish businesses being set up that took the role FAS.ie leave vacant. This created jobs in those companies, and tremendous wealth within a handful of the job site owners. On the other side it made hiring staff in Ireland more expensive for the Irish companies. That in essence made Ireland less competitive as a country to do business in.

Polish or Romanian or people do not speak English, are not that well educated according to the IDA presentations shown worldwide. At least that is what we thought until Poles cone over here and showed us who they really are and how their work ethics compare to ours. So when Poles introduced a Corporation Tax similar to ours, and Romanians introduced their equivalent of our PAYE and PRSI with a discounted rate for the IT and similar attractive workers – our loved multinationals started migrating there. And shutting down operations here. What is the message? We are too expensive. We are too inefficient. If you have ever been into a FAS HQ or any other building, you know exactly what I mean.

The ‘new’ FAS.ie should be a free web site that works for every employer and every job seeker in Ireland. It sounds too simple that anyone could even think it can fail. Then again only a month ago the release of the Governments internship web site JobBridge.ie, with jobs advertised where the application process requires a printed resume and a form to be filled and posted to the employer. In this century? Internships are for graduates or young people without anything to put on their CV anyway. They are unemployed, so what do they put on their CV? Their interest in painting and GAA? They live on Facebook (just in case you did not know!). They do not ‘get’ this old technology, the printers and paper CVs. They do not even wear wristwatches. They wear headphones. As a fashion statement more than anything. Signed by Dr Dre. Worth a monthly wealth care payment even in this country.

The more I think of it, the benefits a new FAS.ie would bring to all of us, to the nation, and to the EURO currency in that matter since we are seriously destabilizing it lately, the more I think how I would like to do it. Do it right. Not the FAS.ie way. Not the (same) SOLAS way. But right. So that it helps put this 14% of us back to work. So that it helps us get staff into all those vacancies almost every good company has today, and finds it terribly hard, slow and expensive to fill. Yes I do want that job! It would make me feel I do something good for my country, for the future and for my kids essentially.

I have spent my last two years making the best Irish Recruitment Agency making even better in the Internet space. I can proudly say I made CPL a market leader in sourcing candidates online on their numerous web sites. It felt great, and the sense of achievement to bring a company you work for to the top is irreplaceable.

The chance to do it with FAS.ie or whatever the new site will be called, to make a best recruitment web site for the whole nation, especially today when it’s needed so badly, would be the best I can wish for.

Hey FAS people, will you let me create and run your online presence?

Kind Regards,
Ivan Stojanovic

Interview: Ellie Doyle on how digital is changing the recruitment industry

Ellie Doyle from Pentasia Recruitment talks about how digital is changing the face of the recruitment industry regarding candidates online presence and potential employers expectations.

Ellie Doyle in her own words is a Digital and interactive recruiter running the Dublin office of Pentasia. Where she does headhunting and recruitment for ecommerce, online and interactive gaming which is a huge industry in Ireland.

How is digital effecting the recruitment industry?

It made my job an awful lot easier. Everything from LinkedIN being recruiters best friend, a free database as such, to being able to look at peoples blogs, you can really sound out the candidate, before you have even met them, before you have approach them, just by what’s on the web. Which is why it’s important to use it correctly if you are a candidate.

For candidates:

People really need to be careful about what the y do and they don’t put online. There is stuff you would want a potential dream employer of yours to see. Get that online. The other personal stuff, go on an do what you want in your social life, but keep it on Facebook private profile. From a candidate point of view it can be such a good asset, but you have to get a right mix of what’s out in the public domain and what you keep private.

#truDublin

#truDublin is on today. It is branded as Un-conference, and I can only say – IT WORKS! A mix of recruiters from agencies and internal company ones, all interested to both hear and talk about the social recruitment. Job boards, guerrilla recruitment, facebook, LinkedIN, blogging, SEO, you name it. All the topics have been discussed in different small groups. Hey I am even going to lead a discussion thread on recruitment via twitter in in the afternoon session!

With @BillBoorman organising an event, you know you will not be bored. You are also guaranteed to hear and have a chance to share your views on the current and only just emerging recruitment trends. Great, great even for Irish Recruiters. The company I work for CPL is of course the main sponsor.

I was amazed with the amount of questions I got about the Jobs Market, especially from the international delegates.
More about it all later – I am late for the discussion thread I am supposed to be leading! :)
